Prerelease weekend for the new Magic: The Gathering TMNT set has wrapped up, and with the official release just days away, social media is already full of opinions. After getting some hands-on time with the Heroes in a Half Shell preconstructed deck, I wanted to share my first impressions and whether it’s worth picking up.
This isn’t a full set breakdown. Instead, this review focuses on the precon itself and how it actually plays once you sleeve it up.
When a new MTG set drops, my process is pretty simple. I skim card previews and articles looking for cards that fit into decks I already own rather than deep-diving into the full set strategy right away. That approach definitely shaped my expectations going into the TMNT precon.
Based on early previews, I expected the deck to lean heavily into creature tokens, especially given the TMNT flavor and some of the supporting cards. Because of that, my first reaction after opening the box was mild disappointment—the deck didn’t seem nearly as token-focused as I had hoped.
Gameplay Surprise: +1/+1 Counters Over Tokens
After actually playing the deck, though, my opinion changed quickly.
The Heroes in a Half Shell precon isn’t really a token deck—it’s a +1/+1 counter deck first, with token synergies playing a supporting role. Once that clicked, the deck made a lot more sense.
Cards like Big Mother Mouser (easily my favorite card in the deck) and Level Up helps scale your board quickly, turning even modest creatures into serious threats. The deck applies pressure earlier than expected and can snowball fast if left unchecked.
While it may not flood the board with tokens out of the box, it still feels strong, cohesive, and surprisingly efficient for a precon.
Token Potential Is Still There
Even though tokens aren’t the main focus, the deck definitely has room to grow in that direction. It includes several cards that support or reward creature token strategies, such as:
On top of that, Irma, Part-Time Mutant can copy one of these creatures, giving you extra value and flexibility. That's not the best part, because Irma retains her name when she becomes a copy, she can even copy your commander!
With just a few upgrades, it wouldn’t be hard to pivot this precon into a much more dedicated token engine if that’s the direction you want to take it.
Final Verdict: Is the TMNT Precon Worth Buying?
Overall, the Heroes in a Half Shell precon feels like a solid, well-designed product. It plays more like a five-color “hydra” deck, steadily growing threats through +1/+1 counters while keeping token synergies in its back pocket.
If you enjoy:
- +1/+1 counter strategies.
- Scalable board presence.
- Precons with strong upgrade potential.
- TMNT flavor with real gameplay depth.
...then this deck is absolutely worth picking up.
While it may not be the token swarm deck I expected, it makes up for that with consistency, power, and flexibility. As far as preconstructed decks go, this one holds its own right out of the box—and only gets better with upgrades.
