The latest TMNT Heroes in a Half Shell precon is a true +1/+1 counter powerhouse right out of the box, and it performs well at almost any skill level. That said, like every preconstructed deck, there’s always room to make it even better.
Because the deck is already strong, deciding what to swap out wasn’t easy. I also prefer to keep my Commander decks as thematic as possible, so most of my upgrades stayed within the broader TMNT card pool rather than pulling in generic staples.
As someone with an affinity for artifacts, I naturally leaned toward adding more artifact synergies and token generators where they made sense.
While putting this together, I realized I ended up making more cuts than expected. To keep things focused, this article highlights one card from each category, why I cut it, and what I felt was the better upgrade.

For this deck I chose to stick with Leonardo, and Donatello as my partner commanders. Other than Hero's in a Half Shell, Leo is the only one who supports a five color deck, so secondary commander really came down to my own playstyle. While Donatello The Brains isn't an artifact or have any sort of artifact ability directly, my bias love for "Robotello" Donatello Gadget Master helped to influence my final decision.
Rat King, Pale Piper was one of my first cuts. While it fits nicely into a creature-token strategy—my original plan—actual gameplay pushed me in a different direction.
After a few games, I committed fully to the deck’s primary identity, which I’ve started calling the “Five-Color Hydra” strategy. To support that, I replaced Rat King with Super Shredder.
With the deck’s ability to generate and stack mutagen tokens, Super Shredder can quickly become a massive threat. When combined with mechanics like sneak, ninjutsu, evoke, or warp, he has no problem closing out games.

Everything Pizza was one of my last cuts, mostly because it’s a new artifact I genuinely wanted to test. While it does provide some early “land security,” I wasn’t thrilled with waiting up to five additional turns before unlocking its full value.
Instead, I swapped it for Door of Destinies. Naming Mutant immediately turns this into a powerful anthem effect, scaling your entire board and rewarding you for simply playing the game.

High Score was the only enchantment I removed, and it’s worth mentioning that this card still has real potential. In fact, it may be worth keeping in your own precon build.
It’s easy to trigger the extra +1/+1 counter in this deck, and drawing a card at end step when you control the biggest creature is no small upside. Cards like Krang, the All-Powerful, Baxter, Fly in the Ointment, Casey Jones, Back Alley Brute, and Corpsejack Menace all benefit from this effect.
That said, I ultimately opted for Brokers Ascendancy. Yes, it’s off-theme—I know—but the steady stream of counters it provides was simply too strong to ignore.

Fast Forward was another early cut. While it’s a solid card and there’s something fun about forcing your opponents to fight it out while you sit back and watch, it didn’t quite advance my own board state enough.
I replaced it with Waves of Aggression, which better complements the deck’s aggressive scaling. With cards like Big Mother Mouser and Level Up in play, the damage potential becomes absurd. It’s honestly hard to overstate just how large that robot can get.
Mana Base Adjustments
I didn’t make many changes to the mana base, aside from swapping out the Thriving lands for full dual lands. Even then, the Thriving lands may still be worth keeping.
Having access to a guaranteed color plus a flexible “wildcard” mana option often feels better in a five-color deck than lands that lock you into a predetermined second color.
Final Thoughts
The Heroes in a Half Shell precon is already a strong and cohesive deck, and upgrading it is more about refining its strengths than fixing weaknesses. Leaning into +1/+1 counters, artifact synergies, and scalable threats keeps the deck powerful while preserving its TMNT flavor.
And in the immortal words of a true legend—Porky Pig—that’s all, folks!
